Abstract or Description: |
Milton Village Hall Spring Energy Fete was a public event held on Saturday 2nd April 2022 in the grounds of Milton Park by Milton Village Hall, Portsmouth. The event featured six student projects that were outcomes of a postgraduate design brief delivered for the MA Design Expanded Practice programme at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a refreshments stall providing free tea and a selection of cakes. The brief was titled NON-AQUIND and was delivered during a ten-week period in Spring term in 2022, in partnership with the community activist group Let's Stop AQUIND. A group of 28 students were invited to consider the local impact of renewable energy infrastructure through conversations with Portsmouth residents about the proposed AQUIND interconnector, a 2,000MW subsea and underground bi-directional electric power transmission link between Portsmouth and Normandy, in France. The brief was staged and invited the students to form groups, conduct fieldwork in Portsmouth, map and visualise data from the fieldwork, then model and prototype design proposals based on research insights. The final outcomes sought to finalise this sequence of work, by emphasising interests and issues that had been articulated by local respondents, as activities that responded to the format of stalls associated with village fetes. Hence the event title - Milton Village Hall Spring Energy Fete. The stalls were titled Portsmouth Adventure, Portopia, Republic of Pebble Island, Pillow Bomb, Orga World and Hidden Corner and featured a range of activities for visitors to engage in, led and interpreted by the students. The stall refreshments stall was run by members of Let's Stop AQUIND, providing tea and a variety of home made cakes for visitors. The event ran from 11am-3pm, with students arriving and departing on a coach which also transported materials and tools from their studio in Lewisham. The deposit includes a set of posters designed by the student groups which describe their stalls, and photographs of the event taken by staff and students. The brief was staffed and delivered by Tobie Kerridge, Naho Matsuda and Rebecca Glyn-Blanco.
