Abstract or Description

This series of experimental photographic workshops took place over a number of days in June 2021. Students and staff at Goldsmiths design department were asked to interact with an analogue photobooth, and experiment with the creative possibilities of the photostrip format.

The analogue photobooth contains a chemical darkroom inside, and its photographs can be manipulated to tell stories, present a single image in a sequence, or play with light and contrast. The workshops brought a 20th Century technology to a digital generation of students at Goldsmiths, many of whom had never encountered an analogue photobooth before.

The resulting images were published in "Primer for a Design Department Collective Self Portrait", an edition of 500 zines designed to invite all staff and students in the Design department to participate in a group portrait in the wake of the pandemic, and return to in-person teaching in Autumn 2021.
