Abstract or Description

Publication launch + Online Panel

Moderator: Dr Eva Cheuk-Yin Li
Speakers: Yarli Allison, Whiskey Chow, June Lam, Chooc Ly Tan

This discussion panel aimed to explore the intersection of race/ethnicity and queer artistic practices within the ESEA community and beyond in the current climate of post-Brexit xenophobia against East and Southeast Asians since the COVID-19 pandemic. The panel brought together artists with Asia-Art-Activism (AAA) who have been actively engaging with issues related to diaspora, queerness, body, memories, and marginality through their artistic practice and activism, including their first publication, Asia-Art-Activism: Experiments in Care and Collective Disobedience.

The critical dialogue focused on their experiences in decolonising artistic practices, creating safe earth spaces, contesting racial categories, and challenging stigmas and stereotypes through their creative artistic practices, including visual anthropology through virtual reality, drag king performances, and creating safe club spaces.
