Abstract or Description

When Winston Churchill declared in his Fulton speech of March 1946 that ‘an iron curtain has descended across the [European] Continent’, he had coined a phrase which would become one of the most recognizable metaphors of the second half of the twentieth century. A continent divided by the Iron Curtain was how Europe was perceived popularly, but also within the community of historians and other scholars engaged in the study of post-war Europe. (The later metaphor of the Berlin Wall as the symbolic barrier between the two ideologies, and two worlds, was merely a variation on the same theme.)
