Abstract or Description

Chooc Ly Tan is a multi-disciplinary artist, DJ, and cultural producer working across moving images, DJ sets, radio, event organising, and club nights. With a background in sculpture and performance, her practice subverts or repurposes systems and methodologies from physics, politics, and music to create new visions of reality. She explores power imbalances through video and sound, drawing on personal histories, found footage, and the Afro-Asian diaspora’s political undertows in the face of ongoing colonialism(s).

Her film On The Offbeat (2021) examines syncopation’s disruptive and productive moments, tracing its significance through Vogue Fem, diasporic rhythms, critical theory, and insect behaviour. Her work has been shown at Kunsthall Oslo, CCA/EdUHK Hong Kong, and Chale Wote Festival, Accra. As a DJ, she has performed at Swallow, a queer nightclub in LA; WORM, Rotterdam; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; Queering Now, London; and LAVA LAKE 24H RAVE. She also runs Décalé, an experimental artist platform and club night, with Léïla Arenou and Kadeem Oak.

She is a Lecturer in Fine Art, teaching on the MFA Fine Art programme at Goldsmiths, the MA Photography programme at the Royal College of Art, and the BFA programme at The Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
