Abstract or Description

Technoscience is prevalent in the science fiction films which are often discussed in science and technology studies (STS). Arguably, such films inform how the public understand science (Kirby 2003), spur real-world scientific and technological developments (2013), and envision future technoscientific worlds and people’s roles within them (Burri 2018). A key example is Michael Crichton’s (1990) novel Jurassic Park, later translated into a movie directed by Steven Spielberg (1993). Filmed in Hawaii, Jurassic Park provides a technoscientific vision of Hawaiian tourism that enforces normative social values (Briggs and Kelber-Kaye 2000) whilst giving rise to a form of ‘celebrity science’; (Jones 2022). However, STS scholars are not typically understood as involved in filmmaking. This workshop considered how STS scholars might employ design to re-configure and re-share their research by developing cinematic translations of it. Inspired by discussions concerning alternative forms of knowledge communication in STS (Jungnickel 2020), the workshop focused on how STS scholars might employ film to further intervene in our collective understanding of technoscientific developments in Hawaii, and perhaps beyond.

Participants were asked to attend the workshop with a short five-slide (PowerPoint) presentation briefly outlining their research interests.
