For this soundscape, I drew inspiration from my fascination with natural phenomena and volcanic activities, which led me to live in Iceland from 2007 to 2009; I was also inspired by my own experience of injustice — my parents were refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia — as well as my ongoing research on the work of indigenous and diasporic activists, and conversations I had with friends, spotlighting certain geopolitical factors – ongoing imperialist exploitations – in places like the DRC and Greenland which are rich in natural resources. I have collaged field recordings of geothermal activities, clips excerpted from speeches by Indigenous activists + I wanted to gel these elements cohesively together with electronic beats and beeps, bass and anger, using intense industrial/noise sound and vocals.

"Following the success of a UK screening tour, we transform Sudden Beams 2: Extraction into an immersive exhibition of sound, live performance and, moving image works in central Nottingham. Working with our new partners Near Now, Broadway Cinema and OTOKA, we extend the audiovisual experience of Extraction into a two-week exhibition between 18-28 May.

Extraction proposes fresh visions of humanity and ecology through Asian-inspired science fiction and mythology. The exhibition presents 10 groundbreaking artists’ film and video and sound works by international and UK South Asian artists, including: Anum Awan & Beast Nest, Fileona Dkhar, Daniel Asadi Faezi & Mila Zhluktenko, Mani Kambo, Subash Thebe Limbu, Bishwadhan Rai, Afrah Shafiq, Chooc Ly Tan, Saphy Vong and Saraab (Shahana Rajani & Omer Wasim).

The programme will also include a live programme composed of soundscape performance, dance party and talk. During the late opening on the 19th May, we will bring Earth Friction, a mesmerising new performance by artist Chooc Ly Tan to the Midlands for the first time. Following by a dance party by Nottingham-based upcoming talent DJ M75."
