Abstract or Description

This essay has been written for the exhibition of Sam Williams' multipart video Deep In The Eye And The Belly at University of California, Santa Cruz. The essay examines the conflict of ecological and queer visions of temporality as they play out in Williams' fiction of a future after climate change. Drawing upon the work of directors Ulrike Ottinger and Werner Schroeter, whose New German Cinema influenced Williams' work, this essay argues that they provide a middle ground notion of performative time which always puts temporality in the inverted commas of theatre.
