Abstract or Description

This essay was written on the occassion of the first European retrospective of artist Chris Korda and her ecological campaign The Church of Euthanasia. The essay looks at Korda's use of feminist, queer and malthusian ideas to critique campaigns which aim to protect nature by banning abortion, while allowing the planet to be destroyed. The Church of Euthanasia with its four pillars of Sodomy, Abortion, Cannibalism and Euthanasia, engaged in deliberate provocations to effect change in 1990s America. The essay goes on to argue, through an engagement with philosopher Anne Dufourmantelle that these seemingly dark and cruel jokes are actually acts of kindness.
