Position paper contribution to opening panel on Mususems and Memory at MSA Conference 2025

Abstract:
Even if those emblems of contested histories, the Benin Bronzes, are widely thought to “belong” now in a museum, this leaves open the question as to where – and, indeed, to whom – they “belong”. This is not a matter of descriptive legal title, but a dynamic matter of legitimacy – in which questions of law sit awkwardly with those of justice.
