Abstract or Description

A workshop led by artists Lloyd Corporation (Ali Eisa & Sebastian Lloyd Rees) inviting the public to 'rummage' through the thousands of found objects comprising a large installation as part of their new exhibition 'Today’s gift is tomorrow’s commodity. Yesterday’s commodity is tomorrow’s found art object. Today’s art object is tomorrow’s junk. And yesterday’s junk is tomorrow’s heirloom'.

"One never knows how long these things have actually been there for, placing them somewhere between alive and obsolete, trash or treasure, transient but enduring, trade and collection, commodities or gifts; and back again."

The workshop invited participants to take a closer, hands-on look at the found objects salvaged from abandoned storages, charity stores, online auctions and disposal sites. Engaging with Jane Bennett's text "Vibrant Matter" workshop attendees were invited to pick out, handle and examine objects together - re-enacting and re-performing the artworks back to its original mode of encounter as a discarded commodity in the market place. Through discussion whilst handling the found objects attendees considered their chosen objects stories and circulations, the emotional connections we make to things and the politics and ethics at play in our possessions. In addition to the objects in the exhibition, Lloyd Corporation also brought along their large archive collection of found street notices, peeled off street furniture in different cities across the world. This created a material engagement with the contents of the exhibitions second installation, a 3 channel 35mm slide projection creating an analogue moving image work of juxtaposed street notices collected by the artists.

This workshop was commissioned as part of a programme of events that respond to Lloyd Corporation's exhibition 'Today’s gift is tomorrow’s commodity. Yesterday’s commodity is tomorrow’s found art object. Today’s art object is tomorrow’s junk. And yesterday’s junk is tomorrow’s heirloom'.
