Abstract or Description

This contribution of a book section in Terms Of Engagement 2 explores ways of using the curation of photography and visual material to think differently about race, representation, identity, citizenship and human rights inspired by Autograph's extensive archive. The section takes the form of a collage bringing together archive imagery from Autograph's collection, documentation from participatory workshops with written reflective notes and insights.

More information on Terms Of Engagement 2:

In this publication, a selection of curators and practitioners are invited to unpack key terms related to socially engaged and curatorial practice whilst reflecting on their own work and sharing their knowledge from the diverse and interdisciplinary approaches which they represent. It contains reflections, speculative project ideas, thinking prompts and new work inspired by the conversations had over the course of the project.

As it becomes increasingly common for photographers to integrate collaborative and participatory approaches into their practices, often as a means to challenge photographic ethics and the politics of representation, the publication provides a valuable space for critical reflection on the practice. Contributions from Ali Eisa, Eliza Hatch, Jamila Prowse, Under Exposed and more.

Language of Collaboration
‘Terms of Engagement’ reflects on the language of collaboration and participation in socially engaged practice, with critical consideration of the usages of these terms. For the second iteration of our programme, we focused on the role of ‘curation’ within the field. TofE is run in partnership with the Photography Programme at the London College of Communication by artists and educators, Kate Watson and Becky Warnock. This iteration of the TofE was run in partnership with The Photographers’ Gallery’s education programme and LCC.
