Abstract or Description

A text commissioned by Focal Point Gallery in response to Bryony Gillard's audio visual chapters, 'My Wits or Salts'. 'Sludge Syntax in a Fluid Ground' encounters Gillard's works through the lens of Cooke's project 'Fluid Ground', which orientates itself around situated waters and their wider infrastructures. 'Sludge Syntax' produces a set of terms (Metabolic Encounters, Scopic Uncanny and Audio Folds) that posit an entangled relation and intra-actions that emerge from an encounter with art practice, a relationality that is elided from contemporary English syntax. This reframes objectivity (an ability to construct an accurate account of an object) as one that includes the body and the apparatuses (from agents in Gillard's praxis to Cooke's writing) through which the account is formed.
