Abstract or Description

Where is art therapy in the United Kingdom going? In approaching an answer to this question I’ve borrowed the concepts of territorialzation, de-territorialzation and re-territorialzation from the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (1999, 2000). I’m trying out these tools as a way of understanding art therapy in the UK as a territory within the wider territory of what Guattari called ‘’Integrated World Capitalism’’, more popularly known as ‘globalization’ (Guattari 2008). I’ll describe processes of de-territorialzation within art therapy, particularly within the Universities and the National Health Service (NHS) and suggest how they are influenced and shaped by processes of neo-liberal capitalist de-territorialzation. The outcome of these processes is re- territorialization, a new configuration of art therapy territories, their professional organization, clinical theory and practice. I conclude by suggesting that we face a threshold beyond which lies the threat of an absolute re-territorialzation of art therapy by contemporary capitalism.

Quelle direction l’art-thérapie prend-t-elle au Royaume-Uni ? Pour tenter de répondre à cette question, je me suis approprié les concepts de territorialisation, de déterritorialisation et de reterritorialisation, concepts extraits de l’œuvre de Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari (1999, 2000). J’utilise ces outils dans le but d’assimiler l’art-thérapie au Royaume-Uni à un territoire, lui-même faisant partie d’un territoire plus vaste, de ce que M. Guattari a appelé le « Capitalisme Mondial Intégré », plus communément appelé « la mondialisation » (Guattari, 2008). Je décrirai les processus de la déterritorialisation dans l’art-thérapie, notamment au sein des universités et du National Health Service (NHS), le système de santé public britannique et suggérai dans quelle mesure ils sont influencés et conditionnés par les processus de reterritorialisation capitaliste néolibérale. Ces processus ont pour résultat la reterritorialisation, c’est-à-dire une nouvelle configuration des territoires de l’art-thérapie, de leur organisation professionnelle, de la théorie et de la pratique clinique. Je conclurai en suggérant que nous franchissons un cap au-delà duquel l’art-thérapie est menacé de reterritorialisation absolue par le capitalisme contemporain.
