In 1980, Pete Thompson published his Mrs Thatcher illusion, one of the most astonishing and unexpected illusions of the century. It has been deservedly cited hundreds of times. The Mrs Thatcher illusion, together with upside-down smiles and upside-down bodies, can reveal selective breakdowns of configural versus featural processes in face perception.
