This chapter argues that reading in Ireland 1891-1922 was not merely a reading of 'Revival' texts, but a cheek-by-jowl encounter with a crowded shelf of new works, newspapers, established standards and popular fiction, priestly homily, polemic and rhetoric. Reading lists are examined, as is the public library movement during the period; while Catholic censoriousness and the restrictions of war are noted as pressures on this expansive variety of reading experience.
