Abstract or Description

This Special Issue attempts to straddle the perhaps irresolvable division between the recognition of cultural differences and the refusal of marginalisation. It assumes automatic cultural constituency for these indigenous British women writers as they belong to and distinctively contribute to contemporary literature. As an indicative rather than definitive hold-all, or framing device, the title, ‘Black British Women’s Writing’ follows the Parekh Report’s lead, ‘belonging equals full acceptance, being recognised as an integral part of the community’. As the creative and polemic writers themselves variously self-identify, (or not), as Black, Black British, Afro-Scot, Black British lesbian, Afro-queer, Afro-Caribbean, British-born of African descent, mixed-heritage and so on, the terms in the title are intended to suggest a scope, for ease of reference to a body of work in a context of literary history, rather than impose racially-gendered restrictions upon complex possible identities and self-terming.
