Work in nationally touring quinennial survey of British group exhibition, presented in 4 venues in UK.

Seated figure (692) 2010 consists of an Olmec period stone figure borrowed from the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury collection in its original display case placed in proximity to Untitled (After Sol LeWitt) 2010 which consists of five pigment prints.

Untitled 2010 consists of two digital animation videos, one a copy of Lemon by Hollis Frampton, one a souvenir African artifact with the same lighting conditions as Lemon displayed on two separate monitors and Unicol stands.

The overall practice is an attempt to reflect upon material culture through variously given and questioned formats. I am interested in how we understand ourselves through social structures, mythologies and collective memory evidenced in art objects, mass media and the built environment. The work has taken the form of moving image, sculpture and photography.

The work selected contribute to the discourse in my practice around the politics of picturing; what it means to make an image of something and what in itself is being pictured. I am interested in mapping out a constellation of ideas and forms, intensities and influence.

The work is in part are the result of an ongoing concern with the ‘anxiety of influence’ described by Harold Bloom in relation to poetry but which has also been used to describe the work of Sherrie Levine. I am interested in the shift away from the self-conscious methods of the Pictures Generation to a more ‘naturalized’ form of appropriation used by subsequent generations engendered through forms of democratization and technology.

I work with a variety of methodologies and techniques, from the straightforward borrowing of objects and their systems of display to meticulous reconstruction and/or adaption of individual works. Ranging in this instance from a 3000-year-old object borrowed from a university collection to digital animation reconstruction of a 1960s structuralist 16mm film.
