Abstract or Description

Through a detailed analysis of the first US radio production of Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949, Tim Crook argues that it managed to express the author’s independent position and intellectual integrity. It was thus ‘probably a more potent weapon of cultural public relations against the vagaries of oppressive, free-market liberal capitalism, fascism, Stalinism
and imperialism than any CIA-funded or covertly-backed Cold War cultural enterprise’
