Abstract or Description

Individual differences in mathematical motivation, ability, and achievement develop under the influences of many genes and multitude of environments. Previous research has suggested that the extent of genetic influences on any trait may differ across different cultures. Here we present the results of the cross-cultural genetically sensitive research, comparing data on mathematical development from the Twins Early Development Study (UK) and the Russian School Twin Registry. We focus on several mathematically relevant phenotypes, including spatial memory, number sense (e.g., numerosity estimation), and mathematical motivation assessed via a web-based battery of tests in the UK and Russia in 16 year-old children. Applying univariate and multivariate genetic analyses we address the questions of the aetiology of the observed links between mathematics and related cognitive and motivational traits. The cross-cultural comparison provides important new insights into the development of mathematical ability.
