Abstract or Description

A performance lecture delivered at Arthouse, Bermondsey, as part of the group exhibition, It's Offal, December 2016. The central portion of the text is an account of the process of countercurrent multiplication that occurs in the kidney. An extended metaphor on the workings of social media, it makes reference in particular to Georges Canguilhem's writing on our understanding of normality and pathology in the workings of the body. In detailing the working of the Loop of Henle (named after its identifier, Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle) the text emphasises the necessity of avoiding teleological explanations for the phenomena we encounter. The exhibition included work by Gina Pane, Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Hermann Nitsch and a tin of Piero Manzoni's canned excrement. While reading, I drank copiously from bottles of urine-coloured liquid.
