Abstract or Description

“Now it’s the image that I want to affect, to diminish. I’m at the point of envisaging a master image [une image passe-partout], which could be indefinitely superimposed on a series of texts, an image that would have no meaning in itself, that would be neither beautiful nor ugly, which would take its meaning only from the text that passes over it.”

What does the model of representation envisaged by Duras here tell us about the relation between text and image, writing and cinema? This paper will seek to establish a context for the paradoxes which structure Duras’s image passe-partout, encompassing the work of Blanchot, Deleuze and Julien Gracq.
