Abstract or Description

This paper discusses a trajectory of teaching and research activities that led to a funding proposal for a practice based design project. The account is made of two broad phases of activity, starting with a postgraduate design brief that acts as ground for emergent research topics and approaches, leading to development of a research proposal that includes a programme of three phases of design activity. This leads to some reflection on empirical treatments of speculative design approaches in relation to the forms of responsibility offered by co-design. The paper can be seen as an attempt to turn proposal writing, which is held by the author as being a tentative, anticipatory and often invisible activity, into something that can be shared with a research community. Proposal writing is thereby identified as an intrinsic and formative sequence of activity that is might generally be of interest for design research. Additionally, given the specific features of the proposal and the approaches taken therein, this paper aims to make an analytical account of speculative approaches in order to deepen the articulation of that form of practice as research.
