Abstract or Description

Patternmapping is a live installation that registers the diversity of personal histories and narratives of the residents of a particular place through dress. This iteration of Patternmapping was conducted at The Bonington Gallery, Nottingham, as a residency under the umbrella of The Community Live.

Residents of the area were invited to visit the gallery to meet with Ruby Hoette and Juliette Kristensen, together with an item of their clothing. This garment was photographed, its narrative as articulated by the participant was recorded and its various locations, from where it was purchased, to memorable occasions it was worn to, were live recorded on a map. As the story of the garment is recorded, it was also reverse pattern-cut becoming part of the gallery display and growing archive.

This project documented local residents’ clothing styles and uniforms as ‘landmarks’ and captured each one through the production of its pattern in the gallery space. This live process inverts the workings of the fashion industry, taking existing garments as source material for documentation rather than producing new garments, and thus the project plays with the tensions and contradictions between individual expression, collective identity and reproducibility that are inherently bound up in contemporary (fashion) culture.
