Abstract or Description

An analysis of the works in neon by Cerith Wyn Evans for a special feature on the artist in the bilingual journal Parkett. The essay considers Wyn Evans' use of the medium of neon to carry text, and looks at the ways in which those texts generate a space of interpretative possibility that lies between and interconnects the worlds of physical fact, imagination and subconscious motivation. The source of several texts in the work of Jimi Hendrix and the Velvet Underground is examined, and the idea of spacing is developed through reference to the Freudian 'return of the repressed', Surrealism as discussed by Walter Benjamin and Rosalind Krauss, and the notion of the Chiasm as outlined in Maurice Merleau-Ponty's The Visible and the Invisible.
