Abstract or Description

My investigation has two parts: The first examines current work within the field, analysing and evaluating the ways in which image making is used to construct narrative and create arresting visions of the future. By examining the formal aspects of image making as well as the means of capture, production and dissemination I aim to uncover the ways in which hopes, dreams, desires and expectations are encapsulated within representations of ‘design fictions’.

The second part will present and explain the use of photography in the work of the experimental design syndicate DWFE. Drawing on the project ‘Recreational Bombs’, I will evaluate the role of image capture as a means of critical and ethical questioning. Started in 2010 ‘Recreational Bombs’ reacts, through a form of experience prototyping and installation, against the over sanitization of everyday life. Creating experiences that operate on an emotional level to stimulate and excite, the work questions of the glorification of warfare and weaponry and the contemporary consumption of extreme forms of violence that remain detached from the horrors of reality.
