Abstract or Description:

Parys Mountain, with is strangely coloured rocks textures
and surfaces littered with industrial remains, appears to be
an alien and almost sci-fi terrain evoking images of postindustrial dystopias. The research explored through a poetic use of visual, sonic and performance languages the heritage site Parys Mountain on Anglesey and its unique history, terrain and geology and searches to communicate a vision of post-industrial dystopia and yet ecological interdependence and beauty for the future. Key fascinations centered around the themes of Residues and Remains: residues and textures on site from centuries of use for copper, sulphur, mining and extraction processes and the remains and detritus from history, archaeology and civilization. We aimed to capture the layers of time and history encased within the surface and depths of Parys Mountain.

The research is seen as a valuable contribution to independent artistic investigations into the relation of art to land, of art to site-specific concerns and the wider investigations into pressing ecological concerns that currently inform artistic debates and theory.
