Abstract or Description

Confirmation grant issued by King Alfonso of Aragon to Leonardo III Tocco on July 16, 1452 is examined here for its authenticity and account validity. Although it contains authentic paleographic and diplomatic elements applied by the Aragon chancery of Naples, a chronological inconsistency in the grant’s ex position shows that its justification was not based upon a real condition but, rather, upon the immediate political needs of the Tocco domain exposed to the Ottoman and Venetian aspirations. Despite this inconsistency, the grant remains a valuable piece of evidence on the Tocco prosopography and the family’s feudal practices, as well as on King Alfon so’s policy in the East.
