Essay for the catalogue accompanying O Lugar das Coisas/A Place for All Things, the career retrospective of the Portuguese sculptor Carlos Nogueira, held at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, September 20, 2012 - January 6, 2013. A Céu Aberto (open to the sky, or roofless) explores the confluence of the poetical, the practical and the political in Nogueira's drawings, collages, sculptures, performances and installations from the 1970s to the present.
