Abstract or Description

The symposium "The Future of Art Therapy“ is organized by the departments "Psychosoziale Versorgungsforschung“ and "Gesundheitsfachberufe“.

Art therapy looks back on more than one hundred years of tradition. Its genesis refers to different currents from the European and Anglo-American area. It is undisputed today to make the potential of art accessible to a psychotherapeutic practice. Guidelines for psychosocial therapies are well established in many national health systems and provide information on the status quo. Particular attention is paid to the further development of corresponding guidelines. For example, the 'S3 Guideline Psychosocial Therapies for Severe Mental Disorders' is currently under revision in Germany. During the symposium renowned art therapists will show future perspectives:

Jill Westwood (Lecturer in Art Psychotherapy and Programme Convenor of the MA Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths, University of London) will present a general view on the emerging practices and the future of art therapy from the UK context. Furthermore she will discuss the relevance of art-based, experiential learning and in particular the potential of the art therapy with large group, which is being developed and researched at Goldsmiths.

Patricia Fenner (Senior Lecturer: La Trobe University Melbourne / Australia) will talk about current developments in trauma work. There are new projects in family violence and veterans trauma recovery.

Vicky Karkou (Director of Postgraduate and International Affairs in Department of Performing Arts, Faculty of Arts and Sciences: Edge Hill University: Lancashire) will talk about the new interdisciplinary project she is currently working on which is called 'dancing the blues'.

Constanze Schulze (Head of study 'Art in social context - Art therapy and Art pedagogy’: Hochschule der Künste im Sozialen, Ottersberg b. Bremen) will present her current project 'Art Therapy in Pain Management’.
