Abstract or Description
The death of the guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1953 closed a chapter on jazz in Europe. However, since then, Reinhardt’s distinct style has had an immeasurable influence on a growing coterie of guitar enthusiasts globally. The rapid emergence of Web 2.0 technologies in the last decade or so have enabled all manner of participants in different musical scenes to engage and interact in new ways; to communicate, teach, promote and document their musical interests. Today the hybrid style known as Gypsy jazz has become a codified form of jazz in its own right and the internet media sharing platform YouTube has been instrumental in the documentation and dissemination of the genre’s performance practices.
This paper critically explores the ongoing codification of Gypsy jazz via YouTube considering contemporary performance practices and the curation and construction of the genre’s more recent history. By examining efforts to document and curate today’s Gypsy jazz scene online this paper ultimately aims to interrogate both the consonances and dissonances surrounding the definition and evolution of this style with an aim to better understand the impact of ongoing technological changes in modes of transmission.
