Abstract or Description

This chapter, originally a keynote paper presented at an Art Therapy Conference in Lodz, Poland in 2008 explores the influence of the social, political and visual contexts in which art therapy has developed. The parallel histories of the profession in the United Kingdom and United States of America are contrasted with the development and uses of art in therapy in different parts of Europe, the East, the North and the South of the world. It argues that the significantly different histories - social, political and visual – of different countries profoundly influence how art therapy does, or does not, develop. Further, that despite the relative ‘success’ of art therapy in Britain and America, ‘neo colonial’ forms of practice and professional organisation should be guarded against and that the diverse, socially and culturally specific uses of art in therapy around the world should be embraced.
