Abstract or Description

In 1736, star singer-actress Kitty Clive locked horns with deputy manager of Drury Lane. This private battle unfolded in the public sphere, on stage, in the press and in song. Through her promoters, Clive managed to construct an image of herself that won over the public . Relying heavily on the press, Clive was able for the first time to galvanize public opininion to overturn a theatre manager's decision.
