Abstract or Description

This chapter re-examines the translation of the string quartet into the public concert sphere in late eighteenth-century London, in part reflecting the enthusiasms of the cello-playing Prince of Wales (the future George IV). The role of the violinist Felice Giardini in developing the concertante string quartet as a public genre is stressed, and the success of Pleyel's most ambitious quartets in London concerts is linked to a detailed analysis of his manipulation of quartet textures.
