Abstract or Description

This article explored my interest in areas of practice where specialism meets the non-specialist, and works which seeks to push boundaries and challenge existing ideas but remain inclusive, using the Her Noise archive as a starting point. I highlight that one of the significant defining attributes of the Her Noise Archive is the broadness of interpretation as to what activities constitute sound art and experimental music, and its inclusive attitude as to where they might be found (in fine art contexts, contemporary and electronic musics, and popular music). The article goes on to explore notions of messy aesthetics, parallels between punk DIY and the avant garde, the plurivocal, and availablism. I use Kembra Pfhaler, Cosey Fanni Tutti, The Knife, Felicity Ford and Maria Chavez as case studies, as well as my own recent project Shit! I can DJ.

hernoise.org was launched in 2012 as an online platform dedicated to the Her Noise Archive. The archive of the Her Noise project, the exhibition curated by Electra in 2005 and acquired by CRiSAP (Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice) in 2010, is now part of the University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections at the London College of Communication. The archive materials have been organised so that they may be researched by students, academics, artists, performers and interested visitors. An important aspect in the development of the original Her Noise Archive was the desire for the materials to form a living archive that will continue to grow. hernoise.org has been developed with this in mind as well as with the intention of increasing access to the materials in the archive and as a platform to further the original ambitions of the Her Noise project, to investigate music histories in relation to gender and to bring together a wide network of women artists who use sound as a medium. One way in which it hoped that these intentions may be achieved is through inviting guests to curate and share pathways through and beyond the Her Noise Archive with the network.
