Abstract or Description

Accompanied by professional urban practitioners, members of the public and researchers from Goldsmiths, I have enjoyed the recurring privilege of following the same soundwalk for the best part of the past two decades. This everyday pedestrian route, which I established early on, sticks to public pavements and designated pathways, with the occasional detour via desire paths, and privately managed land. It passes from Goldsmiths, University of London, in New Cross, across Deptford, to Deptford Creek, and, time allowing, to the other side of the Thames, via the liminal space of the Greenwich Foot tunnel to the Isle of Dogs. Although undeviating from the route, it is never the same walk – soundwalking, like any open-air walking practice, is modulated by atmospheric conditions and the complex web of competing random variables of commingling sociocultural happenings and interactions.
