Abstract or Description
This seminar will examine issues of marginalisation and discrimination through an ethnographic account of the lives and multifaceted identities of six British-born third-generation Bangladeshis from East London. Their stories are powerful and unsettling, charting their journeys from invisibility to visibility and from the periphery to the centre of British social life. Through them, we can gain a better understanding of and insight into the socio-cultural worlds that many young people inhabit in contemporary Britain.
Dr Aminul Hoque is a lecturer in the Educational Studies Department at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a visiting lecturer at London Metropolitan University. His work focuses on issues of multiculturalism, social justice, youth policy, education, race and religion in Britain – which he engages with through community volunteering and journalism alongside his academic work. His most recent book (2015) is British-Islamic Identity: Third-Generation Bangladeshis from East London.
